Blankenburg Castle dominates the skyline and sits above the famous Baroque gardens and the smaller summer castle. The picturesque castle is of national historical importance as the former residence for the Counts of Regenstein-Blankenburg and the Dukes of Braunschweig- Wolfenbüttel.
Regenstein Castle is just three kilometers north of Blankenburg. Today only the ruins are visible of this once impregnable castle. Built on a 300 meter high sandstone outcrop the castle was first associated with the Count of Regenstein in 1162.
