Bad Harzburg is one of those typical spa towns of the Harz. On first impressions it can seem quiet and a bit dated, but scratch the surface and you will discover a vibrant town that is anything but sleepy. Horse racing, casinos, golf courses, concerts, Nordic walking, marathons and many other sporting events, plus one of the best spas in Lower Saxony all highlight the need to spend some time here and explore this fascinating town.
Historically Bad Harzburg has had a chequered past, according to local legend the Emperor Charlemagne built a chapel on top of the Burgberg Mountain around 780, in place of a Saxon sacred grove dedicated to the Saxon god Krodo. Then over the next 500 years the region power exchanged hands many times. The first development of a spa town was around 1569 when Duke Julius of Brunswick promoted the use of saline water-well to extract salt. In 1892 the town changed its name from Neustadt to Harzburg, and was given the title of Spa Town in 1894.
All the health springs are natural mineral springs with no additional salts or minerals added. The pump room (Wandelhalle) with its Tambourpendentif Dome is the historic centre of the town. Three of the seven natural springs inside are drinkable. A trip up to the Burgberg can be done by foot or by the Burgberg Cable Car where the remains of 11th century fort can be seen. Here also is the Canossa Memorial which can be seen for miles at night when it is illuminated.
Due to its closeness to the National Park, Bad Harzburg is a good starting point for many walks. You can trek from the top of the Burgberg via the Kaiserweg Trail to the Torfhaus with other walks to the Brocken. Closer to town is Krodoland, with a built in riding school and children's play area. The Silberbornbad has indoor and outdoor swimming pools and is next to the High SkyRope Park. The casino can be found at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Bad Harzburg has many festivals, the main ones being the Festival of Lights with thousands of candles and lights plus of course the annual horse racing event, Harzburg Race Week (Harzburger Rennwoche).
